Following a triumphant return to live performances in 2021, the LA Phil continues its longstanding KCRW partnership as we bring you the 2022 KCRW Festival at the Hollywood Bowl. And this isn’t just any old year for a fabulous summer fest. This time around, we’re celebrating the 100th birthday of the famed venue, which opened its gates in 1922.

After last year’s abbreviated season, we’re doing it up with a full slate of six blissfully eclectic shows. Prepare to party all summer long with artists ranging from Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman to icon of song and style, Grace Jones.

The series runs from late July to late September. The festivities kick off with Rahman on Sunday, July 24. Next up is a night of discofied delight on Aug. 7 with Polo & Pan and Parcels. Aug. 14 promises deep grooves with sets from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, Durand Jones & The Indications, and an energetic opener courtesy of Celisse.

The summer heat keeps going Aug. 21 with an orchestral double header of Hiatus Kaiyote and Flying Lotus taking the stage with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra led by Thomas Wilkins. Back and more action packed than ever is Reggae Night on Sept. 18. This year’s good vibrations are coming to you courtesy of UB40, Big Mountain, Maxi Priest, and The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson.

Last, but most certainly not least: Grace Jones takes to the hallowed Hollywood Bowl stage once again on Sept. 25 with Scottish synth pop favorites CHVRCHES. We can think of no better 100th birthday present for the bowl than another stunning set from the living legend and friends.

KCRW Festival subscription packages are available now. Individual show tickets go on sale May 3. Check out the full schedule and details below. We can’t wait to see you there.

Prolific film composer A.R. Rahman is known for bringing Indian classical music together with orchestral arrangements, electronic music and various other sounds from around the world. He’s won dozens of awards — including an Oscar for his score to Slumdog Millionaire — and collaborated with everyone from Mick Jagger and U2 to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

  • Flying Lotus and Hiatus Kaiyote with Orchestra
  • Hollywood Bowl Orchestra
  • Thomas Wilkins, conductor

Pitchfork has designated Flying Lotus as an “icon of the past 25 years.” The Grammy-winning LA native is a producer, composer, rapper, filmmaker, and the founder of Brainfeeder Records. Three-time Grammy nominees Hiatus Kaiyote build their laidback electric soul out of grooving piano, Nai Palm’s smoky vocals, and perpetually shape-shifting rhythms. Both artists team up with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra for a big night at the Bowl.

  • Reggae Night XX
  • UB40 • The Original Wailers featuring Al Anderson •
  • Maxi Priest • Big Mountain

Four of reggae’s biggest groups bring the sounds of the islands to the Bowl. It’s a night full of hits from UB40 (“Red Red Wine”), Maxi Priest (“Close to You”), and Big Mountain (“Baby, I Love Your Way”), while The Wailers carry the flame for their departed leader, Bob Marley.

  • Grace Jones
  • CHVRCHES

You’ve seen that face before, Grace Jones returns to the Bowl! The disco star, actor, and model is an icon of the 1980s and influencer on generations of forward-thinking Black artists. With their massive washes of synthesizer and Lauren Mayberry’s soaring voice, CHVRCHES makes music to fill big outdoor spaces with even bigger songs.
