A couple weekends ago my best friend was hanging out at my place with her 8 month old baby and I warned her that they were entering my “new music listening zone” and would just have to listen to whatever I popped on the player. No kid’s music for me.

I grabbed J Rocc’s new albumSome Cold Rock Stuf and it was PERFECT. Baby Hunter was into it! She was dancing with us, getting down to some funky tunes. We had a blast and I loved the whole album – in fact we even went back to a few tracks we had to hear twice.

This is an album I would recommend to just about anyone, especially for people like me who dig instrumental hip hop. Stream and download “Stay Fresh” below to get a taste.

This song is actually the soundtrack to a video Mayer Hawthorne shot of J. Rocc in Japan. Mayer shot it on an iPhone and edited it on their flight back to LA. Check it out:

p.s. for those who don’t know J.Rocc, he founded the Beat Junkies, has been the DJ for Madlib’s live shows, and produced numerous mixtapes, but this is his first solo album. Also, his label Stones Throw is currently celebrating its 15-year anniversary. Congrats!
