KCRW’S WORLD FESTIVAL LINE UP

SUNDAYS, 7PM

KCRW’s World Festival celebrates its 14th season with programs showcasing sounds from around the globe. Created in partnership with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Sunday programs highlight established and rising artists from diverse backgrounds.

June 24

Glen Campbell

Dawes + special guests Jackson Browne, Jenny Lewis, Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Kris Kristofferson and Lucinda Williams

Legendary singer/guitarist Glen Campbell, a true American musical icon, will give his final Los Angeles concert at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, June 24 as part of his Goodbye Tour – a celebration of his extraordinary five-decade-plus career and the release of his acclaimed final studio album Ghost on the Canvas. The first half of the concert will begin with California-based roots rock band Dawes, joined by special guest Jackson Browne and just-confirmed special guests Kris Kristofferson, Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Lucinda Williams, performing original songs and selections from Campbell’s repertoire that have been of special influence. The concert will close with Campbell performing his most memorable hits.

Ben Harper

Fitz and the Tantrums

Vieux Farka Touré

After nearly a decade, California native Ben Harper returns to the Hollywood Bowl with his diverse style of handcrafted rock – a powerful amalgam of singer-songwriter, roots and blues, jam band, and soul and funk music from which he draws inspiration. Completing this triple bill are the “Hendrix of the Sahara” Vieux Farka Touré and soulsters Fitz and the Tantrums. Since their first show at Hollywood’s Hotel Café in December 2008, Fitz and co. have experienced a meteoric rise to success, all on the strength of their stellar five-song EP, Songs for a Breakup, Vol. 1. Complete with six killer musicians, five dapper suits, irresistible songs, some serendipity and one vintage organ, few performers deliver an unrestrained blast of soul-clapping, get-down-on-the-floor, moneymaker shakers like Fitz and the Tantrums. Now post-release of their debut full length, Pickin’ Up the Pieces (Dangerbird Records), the troupe adds another milestone moment to their fast-rising career with their Hollywood Bowl debut.

Crafting London’s premiere electronic dance music, Hot Chip is known for its stellar live shows; in its return to the Bowl, the band will lead us on a journey through club music into funkified gospel groves. Passion Pit reveals a 21st–century sound with soaring hooks, infectious melodies and enigmatic lyrics. Syrian music legend Omar Souleyman will open the show.

September 23

Animal Collective

Flying Lotus

Huun Huur Tu

With a penchant for boundless experimentation, the sonically ambidextrous Animal Collective brings the 2012 KCRW World Festival series to a close with their venue debut, joined by experimental, multi-genre artist Flying Lotus. His recent Coachella appearance was described as an “occasion…something huge. Swag oozing from his pores…spinning the beat music he helped pioneer, as the crammed tent went ballistic.” (LA Weekly). “One of the best hours of the festival, and my musical year, was from 9 to 10 p.m. at the Gobi Tent, where Los Angeles beatmaker Flying Lotus pushed forth a set of deconstructed, heavy-duty bass music… Lotus’ work as a beat producer has pushed the genre in fantastic new directions…” (Randall Roberts, LA Times). Opening the show is innovative Tuvan throat singing group Huun Huur Tu.

September 30

Wilco

The acclaimed Chicago sextet appears in support of its latest release, the Grammy-nominated The Whole Love. “Quite simply, this is the work of a great band at the peak of their powers, and The Whole Love is a joy to hear…confirming once again that Wilco is as good a band as America can claim in the 21st century.” – All Music. Singer, songwriter and guitarist Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco in the mid-1990s. The Whole Love is the third album by the band’s current lineup, which solidified in 2004 when guitarist Nels Cline and guitarist/keyboardist Patrick Sansone joined Tweedy, founding bassist John Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen.
