Lol Tolhurst x Budgie x Jacknife Lee – "Los Angeles (Feat. James Murphy)”
Welcome to LA. Our fair city’s latest anthem comes courtesy of a handful of legends joining forces. A musical collaboration between The Cure’s Lol Tolhurst, Siouxsie and the Banshees’ Budgie, and Garret “Jacknife” Lee producing — this single is topped off by distinct sing-speak vocals from LCD Soundsystem founder and frontman, James Murphy. A project among this “goth supergroup” (in the words of one fan) has apparently long been in mind, and what a result we now have. This track contains provocatively raw foot-stomping energy, an unquestionably cool aesthetic, and enough attitude to permanently cock your eyebrow. Stay tuned for more: The debut album — also titled Los Angeles — is due on Nov. 3rd.
Nation of Language – “Too Much, Enough”
Ok, say when: Longtime Brooklyn three-top Nation of Language are coming in for the big pour with their latest synth-laden indie-pop track. Featuring perky drum machine beats, bright poppy synths, and a cascade of keys under singalong rhythmic vocals — this track is less of a song and more of an incantation. Consider it a lifetime pledge to seeking that elusive sweet spot... moderation for better living. Don’t miss the stylized music video, a broadcast TV dream peppered with featured appearances guaranteed to surprise and delight.
Berhana – “Gone”
It’s the peak of summer in the Southland, and here’s one long-practiced way to beat the heat: Cruising through the LA streets. The art of the AC-up, windows down boulevard blast just isn’t complete without the perfect playlist, and this track’s your lead contender. ATX singer-songwriter-rapper Berhana presents a solid head-bobber that’s icy cool, while simultaneously nice and warm. It’s inviting, enticing, and giving good vibes only at the cookout. Starting with a pop-fizz sample and ending with a whole house party, this track’s a feel good time fit for the season.
Night Tapes – “Humans”
Every now and then, a song comes around that seems preternatural, pre-determined, formed molecule by molecule by the musical biosphere. Night Tapes are the London trio of roommates who started out jamming for laughs in the living room, and ended up making dream pop so perfect it’s breaking our brains. Featuring a sexy-cool beat, gauzy layers of soprano vocals, and a breakout groove so good it’ll possess you entirely like an alien abduction’s tractor beam. Add in a dancer’s paradise music video (plus swords and fire) — this track’s a ten. Fans of Purity Ring and Men I Trust should especially take note.
Sputnik Sweetheart – “Heavenly”
Let’s keep with the alien theme for this week’s closer, a multi-influenced track from Aussie alt-rockers Sputnik Sweetheart. Elements of ‘00s rock + pop-punk, and ‘90s alternative bubble to the surface in this solid single — a celebration of analog instrumentation if we’ve ever heard one. Here you’ll find rock-on riffs, tight percussion, and a foundational bassline. Click it for the minor chorded emotional blast-off you’ve been craving, and don’t miss the video for an otherworldly visitation that’ll have you questioning your neighbors’ origins.
