KCRW has had a banner week of some of our favorite bands visiting for their second time around our studios.  Today’s treat was Mayer Hawthorne.

Mayer Hawthorne is a charmer. I don’t think I’m going out on a limb by saying that.  That was proven today here when he strolled into our studios in a killer coat and shades. Today’s performance marked his second visit to Morning Becomes Eclectic.  (Revisit his first session here.) His visit this time around definitely turned a lot of heads today.  As Jason Bentley so lovingly noticed, a lot of female heads were turned by Mayer’s performance.

It would really be an affront to the current renaissance of retro soul revival to boil Mayer Hawthorne’s success down to the lady-friendliness of his music.  His appeal is in his playful stage presence and silky smooth crooning.  His music takes a classic soul aesthetic and and brings it into now with a modern feel.  Mayer says that’s how he wants everyone to look at it.  He’s not looking back at the “good old days,” so much as he’s charging forward into the “new good days.”

Watch his playful performance in our studio as he performs “The Walk.”
