There is no doubt that Portugal. The Man have been influenced by T. Rex. Not only is singer John Gourley’s voice reminiscent of the vocal stylings of Marc Bolan but a song like “Got It All”, our favorite off their last album, clearly takes its inspiration from the glam rockers.

When the band visited our studios last year for a live set on Morning Becomes Eclectic (with a string section!), we decided to take it to the next level and asked them to record a T. Rex cover. They decided on “Main Man” and you can see the results below and check out a short video where Gourley talks to DJ Dan Wilcox about the recording. He also ruminates on how he discovered T. Rex and what he loves about them here.

(And check out all our DJ’s T. Rex remixes AND find out more info about our show with Portugal. The Man THIS Saturday, July 21!)
