We’ve hosted both Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie on KCRW’s Guest DJ Project and I wanted to share those sessions in honor of today’s news that they are not only going to be touring this summer, but also releasing new music.

The duo have always written really great pop songs where the hilarious lyrics are just icing on the cake. We get a little insight on where that comes from in their Guest DJ sets.

Jemaine chose many of the artists that inspired the Kiwi comedy duo — including Beck and Prince (“I’m no Prince. As much as I try”).

Funnily enough, both fellas picked Harry Nilsson – Jemaine went with the quirky “Coconut”, while Bret chose “Think About Your Troubles”, praising his “surreal” songwriting

Bret also tells us how the Godfather of Soul James Brown helped him tap into his funky side.

Take a listen below.
