Rob Machado has won many of pro surfing’s most prestigious contests and is one of the most well known surfers in the world thanks to his trademark laidback style. He drove up from San Diego just to tape this segment and when he walked in the basement, you couldn’t miss him – a killer tan and long wild locks bleached by the sun.

The issue of VogueBlake Lively featuring photographs of him with starlet by Mario Testino had just been released but he was as modest as anyone can be. For hisGuest Dj Project set, Rob told a great story about being recognized by Paul McCartney at LAX, discovering his first Blues record and – my favorite – jamming to Jimi Hendrix. He particularly loves Jimi’s lyrics in “If 6 was 9” — “I’m the one that’s gonna have to die when it’s time for me to die. So let me live my life the way I want to.”

That says it all, doesn’t it?

He just released a surf film —Melali: The Drifter Sessions — documenting sessions across the vast Indonesian island chain. He was heavily involved in the soundtrack for the film. Check out his song list and the trailer below.

Guest DJ Project Song List

1. If 6 Was 9 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience

2. Avalon Blues – Mississippi John Hurt

3. Yesterday – The Beatles

4. Alive – Pearl Jam

5. Old Dark Road – Melali Sessions Band
