SXSW Preview: Pan Caliente’s Picks

Una vez mas, we will flock to the most un-Texas part of Texas to cram as much live music as possible in 5 days. Feet sore, and late night bratwurst in hand, here are the bands we plan to definitely catch showcasing at SXSW this year!

Juventud Juché (Spain)

Sound: Punk/Experimental

Currently one of my favorites from Spain, and their new album out soon… is f*$king awesome! Should be great energy live.

Miedo / En tu Casa by Juventud Juché

Pedrina y Rio (Colombia)

Sound: Indie Pop

Colombia is quickly becoming a true force as the musical vanguard for new, exciting & groundbreaking bands. These guys should prove worthy.

Showcasing: Thursday, March 17 at Speakeasy & Friday, March 18 at Departure Lounge

Chicano Batman (Los Angeles, EEUU)

Sound: Neo Chicano Soul

Going on the road as support for the Alabama Shakes the past year ain’t too shabby. These guys always deliver a great show & I can’t wait to hear some of the new tracks live.

HINDS (Spain)

Sound: Indie-pop

Although not entirely in Spanish, this all-female indie-pop band out of Spain has gotten a lot of blog attention and ours as well. It’s exciting to have an opportunity to see what all the hype is about.

Algodón Egipcio (Venezuela via Mexico)

Sound: Experimental Electro

A side project of sorts that completely deviates from Ezequiel Bertho’s sound with the band, Jovenes y Sexys. His new album is fire! See him live.

Miss Garrison (Chile)

Sound: Electro Pop

Well produced, melodic, & moody. Flirts with electro-rock but stands on its own in a very robust Chilean music scene.

Vanessa Zamora (Mexico)

Sound: Indie Singer-Songwriter

She fits right in somewhere between Natalia Lafourcade, Carla Morrison & Julieta Venegas. Heartfelt & sincere music.

Showcasing: Friday, March 18 at Departure Lounge

Grenda (Baja California)

Sound: Minimal Electronica

This incredibly nuanced & somber project from a virtually unknown Baja artist is more than worth watching live. Seen him at NRML in TJ last year and was truly impressed. Worth mentioning: he’s the offspring of one of Mexico’s Electronica heavyweights.

Big Big Love (Mexico)

Sound: Indie Pop

One of those bands I came across researching for this post. And I ain’t too mad at that. I’m an instant fan despite my irreverence for bands out of Mexico that sing in English.
