Wow. The Afghan Whigs. Wow.

The Afghan Whigs didn’t ease their way into their MBE set. They came out of the gate roaring. Reunited after around 10 years, they are clearly in top form and not holding anything back. We were all pretty dumbfounded in the best kind of way. Jason even told Greg Dulli: “I feel like I’ve grown up with you and you’ve been a fixture in my life as a music fan”. Dulli said he’s been humbled by the response they’ve been getting.

Dulli not only noticed I was rocking out in Master Control, but told me the band feeds off that kind of stuff. They really respond to the crowd. Even when it’s some chick boogieing behind the glass.

And as if it wasn’t already awesome enough, they invited tourmate Van Hunt in the studio for a rendition of his song “Mean Sleep”.

I was lucky enough to attend one of their two sold out shows over the weekend and it was one of the most adoring crowds I’ve ever seen in LA — mouthing every word, fists in the air, some air guitar and LOTS of couples making out. Guess it’s hard to ignore the seductiveness of this soul-tinged music led by one of rock’s great frontmen.

It was among the last of their scheduled reunion tour shows (they have one on New Year’s Eve) but I hope the adoration might convince them to do more.

This was an incredible Morning Becomes Eclectic live session and one worth revisiting in the archives.
