I saw the Head and the Heart earlier this year at SXSW and I have been anxiously awaiting the day they would walk into the basement here at KCRW for a live performance. I knew that day was on the horizon because they have everything it takes to be hugely popular – a genuine camaraderie that is reflected in their harmonies, as well as a solid set of well-written songs. They are a tight unit with a great connection that you can actually feel — a result, in part, of spending nearly the entire year touring together.

I’ve always thought of them as a Seattle band but its ends up two of the members are from the SoCal area – guitarist /vocalist Josiah Johnson is from Orange County and keyboardist Kenny Hensley is from LA! Josiah says a weird series of coincidences let them all together to form a band.

Check out a great set of live songs from their fantastic debut on Sub Pop here and see them live when they headline the Music Box on October 13, with openers Thao and the Get Down Stay Down.

p.s.: Guitarist/singer Jonathan Russell hinted that they’ll “buckle down” and work on new material for the next record in Spring of next year. Can’t wait.
