What I Got at the Post Office Today by Chuck P

Written by

All of our DJs receive hundreds of CDs a month to consider for airplay. In this regular feature, KCRW DJ Chuck P catalogues his musical bounty from the Post Office each week.

Any day vinyl comes in the mail is a good day.  Today, 5 LPs showed up.  Four of them are remastered reissues of amazing albums: two from X (Wild Gift & Under The Big Black Sun) and two from the Circle Jerks (Golden Shower Of Hits & Wonderful) plus the new album from Grandchildren.

I’m looking forward to hearing the different mix on those previous four albums I know so well.  Lots of great CDs showed up today as well.  Here are the highlights.

giantsand

1) Giant Sand “Blurry Blue Mountain” – even though Burns & Covertino left a while ago to concentrate on Calexico, Howe Gelb keeps on as Giant Sand.  HIs last release a couple of years ago kept the bar high, so this should be a worthy listen.

kisses

2) Kisses “The Heart Of The Nightlife” – seems like I’ve had most of the songs on this CD for a while now, but I’m glad to have the chance to absorb all the songs in album form.  One of the new bright spots in the LA scene. The album is out today and you can check out a video for Kisses below.

tapes

3) Tapes ‘n’ Tapes “Freakout” – first single from their new album, Outside. Sounds familiar.  Need to hear more from the rest of the album, but this isn’t a bad start.

Other worthy discs are the new Charles Bradley CD on Daptone (a most solid label), a new Earth disc from Southern Lord, and the new DVAS cd.

Serious booty to consume for this audio pirate.

Um… that probably sounds more naughty than it’s supposed to.

More tonight at 12a.

Cheers,

Chuck P.
