Cape Town, London, JVC Jazz in US and Europe

Hosted by
I’ve just returned from a trip to Cape Town and Dubai, photos of which are posted on my vox.com page along with details about the concert/tour I attended called Convoy To Cape Town. The venue was a converted furniture warehouse called The Assembly

, located in the historic District Six area.  Held in support of the charity White Ribbon Alliance, artists on the bill included a number of UK acts such as Get Cape Wear Cape Fly, Wunmi and Man Like Me as well as  local singer songwriter Josie Field.

Given my recent trip to South Africa it seemed appropriate to talk about the upcoming 46664 Concert in London’s Hyde Park to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday.  46664 was Mandela’s prison number when he was incarcerated on Robben Island just off the coast of Cape Town. Artists on the bill include Annie Lennox, Soweto Gospel Choir, Johnny Clegg,Eddy Grant, Will Smith, Razorlight and just added Joan Baez and Jerry Dammers.

And lastly if jazz is your thing check out the JVC Jazz Festival which has dates in the US and Europe. The festival is in New York this month and includes Jill Scott, Mos Def big Band with special guest Gil Scott Heron, Sergio Mendes and Bill Frisell Trio. There’s also a festival within a festival at the Society for Ethical Culture, highlights of which include Ravi Coltrane’s tribute to his mother Alice, star on the rise Esperanza Spalding and Charles Lloyd’s 70th Birthday tour. Other destinations for The JVC Festival tour include Paris, the Netherlands, Los Angeles and Newport. Check the website for full details of line up and ticket availability.

The Global Gig Guide podcast  is produced for KCRW by JC Swiatek and the theme music is composed by The Plush Interiors.
