Global Gig Guide goes to Boston, Paris and Memphis

Hosted by

Hi this is Gemma Dempsey and this week the Global Gig Guide goes to Boston for the Celtic Music Festival; to the Ba-Ta-Clan in Paris;  and to Elvis’ Graceland home in Tennessee.

‘It’s the dead of winter, what else are you gonna do?’ is the question posed by the organizers of Boston’s Celtic Music Festival.  Dance the winter blues away at ceildhs and concerts around the city, or check out the workshops for the bodran, guitar and fiddle – you never know, you might just discover the musician within you!

The Ba-ta-clan in Paris is a music venue steeped in history.

Built in 1865 in the style of a Chinese Pagoda, it takes its name from an Offenbach operetta and has hosted vaudeville shows, a cinema and the famous reunion of The Velvet Underground’s John Cale, Nico And Lou Reed in the 1970’s.  Its now 2007 and the venue may be minus its pagoda, but it continues to present an eclectic range of artists -  from fado singer Cristina Branco, US rockers Eagles of Death Metal,  to singer songwriter Peter Von Poehl from Sweden.

Elvis Presley was born on January 8th 1935 and this event is celebrated at his home in Graceland.
Events include a dance party, Elvis Bingo and ‘Bears on Tour’ scavenger hunt. No Elvis celebration would be complete without music, and his back up group, the Imperials, will be one of several other acts paying homage to The King.

That’s it for this weeks Global Gig Guide – check back with us next week for more information on global gigging.
