Palestinian-Canadian, poignant-folk-singer-songwriter Nemahsis hit our radar last year with the arresting single “Spinning Plates” from her debut LP Verbathim: Her striking shifts between growl-register spoken word verses and the lilting beauty of her singing voice on the chorus stopped us in our tracks.

Fresh from a sold out North American tour behind Verbathim and a fabulous night at the 2025 Juno awards — where Nemahsis picked up statues for Breakthrough Artist and Best Alternative album — she joins us for a chat about making the album, overcoming the setbacks that delayed its release, and what it means to be a truly independent artist. And she’s sharing five songs from artists that inspired her to craft her rapturously received record. P.S. Santigold, if you’re reading this, hit her up…
