LAUSD’s first ‘parent trigger’ school opens

24th Street Complex was the only one to see it through all the way. Parents decided on a unique change for the school: a merger between the district elementary school and a charter school called Crown Prep. The process was not easy — parents were divided about the trigger and at some points there were even allegations of fraud on the part of petition signature collectors. Still, the change has occurred. Now, as the newly formed “24th Street Complex” prepares to open for fall classes, Alex Schmidt takes an up close look at a school in transition.
