In August 2022, 19% of the students at 135th Street Elementary School in Gardena were chronically absent, which means they missed at least 10% of the school year. This August, that number dropped to 7%. Photo by Robin Estrin.

LAUSD student absences soared during the pandemic. Slowly, in large part due to school attendance counselors’ tireless work, kids are returning to class. 

Tom Morello, a political activist and Rage Against the Machine guitarist, is partnering with a nonprofit to launch music programs at schools across the country.
