Spatulas and other utensils made from black plastic are potentially toxic to human health, even more so than regular plastic items, researchers say. Also problematic: black food containers like sushi to-go trays.

Update 12/18/24: A researcher at McGill University in Canada discovered a miscalculation in this study assessing the risk flame retardants in black plastic household items pose to human health. The miscalculation resulted in the study overstating the risks, based on the EPA's standard for safe exposure. The study authors issued a correction, though say the miscalculation does not affect their study's overall conclusion.
