President Bush in Europe for D-Day

As protesters gathered in the streets of Rome today, Pope John Paul reminded President Bush he-s opposed to the war in Iraq and disturbed by the treatment of Iraqi prisoners at Abu Ghraib. He accepted America-s Medal of Freedom and asked God to bless America. This weekend, the President will commemorate the D-Day invasion with leaders of Europe, including France and Germany who opposed his Iraq invasion. He-ll ask their help, in part by claiming a link between his "War on Terror- and World War II. Warren Olney speaks with military historians and experts in national security and international affairs from both sides of the Atlantic about whether that historical comparison holds and whether the Atlantic Alliance still has a role to play. Making News: New Iraqi Prime Minister Supports Continued Multi-National Force The new Prime Minister of Iraq made his first address on national TV today. He said that even after the transfer of power at the end of this month, withdrawal of American forces would be a -disaster.- Hassan Fattah, former editor of Iraq Today, now a correspondent for Time magazine, has an analysis of Iyad Allawi's "state of the union" address, an update on the most recent events in Najaf, and a look at what to expect in the future. Reporter's Notebook: Smarty Jones and the Triple Crown Once again, a racehorse has won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Can Smarty Jones win the Belmont Stakes tomorrow and, with it, the Triple Crown? Newsday's Paul Moran, who has been covering horse racing for 30 years, is at Belmont for tomorrow-s third leg of the Triple Crown, and he-s written, -It may be impossible to wager with any conviction against Smarty Jones.-
