Karen Bass Elected to Speaker of Assembly

After the Governor, California’s most powerful elected official is the Speaker of the State Assembly. Only one woman has ever served in the job—Orange County Republican Doris Allen, whose term was very brief. The only African American was San Francisco Democrat Willie Brown and he was Spaker longer than anyone else in history.

Today, the Assembly elected the first black woman—Los Angeles Democrat, Karen Bass .
