California Primary Election Results

The Bush White House was among those who thought it would take a moderate Republican like Dick Riordan to defeat Democratic Governor Gray Davis in the general election. Much to their surprise, and that of many Californians, they got Bill Simon. We join two veteran political consultants for a look at Riordan's flawed campaign, the ideology of Bill Simon, and the contentious gubernatorial campaign that will precede November's general election. Democrat Bill Carrick and Republican Alan Hoffenbloom also review election results for several other statewide offices and propositions. Newsmaker: Tight Races on City Council-s 2nd District, Prop Q In Los Angeles County, Sheriff Lee Baca and Supervisor Gloria Molina faced light opposition and won big. Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky was unopposed. In the City of LA, two races demonstrate that every vote really does count. Rick Orlov, political reporter for The Daily News, says the outcome of the 2nd City Council District and Proposition Q races will depend on the tally of outstanding provisional and absentee ballots. Reporter-s Notebook: Anti-Airport Voters OK Park, Shift Balance of OC Board of Supervisors Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas has been reelected by a vote of almost 2-to-1 over Deputy DA Wally Wade. Superior Court Judge Ronald Kline, who faces child pornography charges, was forced into a runoff with one of 11 write-in candidates. But, says Peter Larsen of the Orange County Register, the big news is Measure W, designed to head off a commercial airport on the former El Toro Marine Base.
