The UN Nuclear Non-Proliferation Conference
Sixty years after the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki either killed or maimed half a million people, representatives of nearly 190 countries signed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty are convened at the United Nations in New York. Nuclear powers, including the US, are being pressed to reduce their arsenals while non-powers, such as Iran, are pushing for the right to develop nuclear energy. Are the US and Russia providing leadership toward nuclear disarmament? Is the non-proliferation treaty in trouble? Guest host Diana Nyad speaks with some of the world's leading authorities on nuclear weapons. (An extended version of this discussion originally aired earlier today on To the Point.) Making News: Election Eve Campaign Crunch On the final day of the Los Angeles mayoral race, Mayor James Hahn and Councilman Antoniio Villaraigosa are criss-crossing the city on a quest for every last possible vote. Villaraigosa will repeat his 2001 all-night bus ride, arriving at his polling place tomorrow morning. An admittedly charisma-challenged Hahn will focus on the San Fernando Valley. Rick Orlov of the Daily News, has the latest on the last minute push.
