Pop Culture Zeroing In on California Angst

Joe Mathews says pop culture is telling us something that a lot of state politicians won't: that, in spite of improving state finances, not everything is sunshine and light in the Golden State.

If you ask how California is doing, some government types might say the answer is pretty good. The state is building up its rainy day fund; it's creating jobs faster than the country as a whole; and it leads the US when it comes to things like fighting climate change. There's a prevailing view that California is enjoying a major recovery from the economic downturn. But Zócalo's Connecting California columnist Joe Mathews says you get a completely different take on the situation from local pop culture, especially music, which is much more in tune with the struggles of everyday life in California.
