The UCLA Bruins football team has won three straight against cross-town rival USC, but when it comes to power and influence, California's public universities could learn some things from the rise of the Trojans.

Zócalo Public Square columnist Joe Matthews is picking UCLA to continue its recent dominance over USC at the Coliseum this weekend. But in this week's edition of Connecting California, Matthews says he's impressed with the way that USC has built itself into one of the country's wealthiest and most powerful private institutions. Going forward, he'd like to see the University of California take a page from the Trojan's playbook.
