A block party in South Pasadena reveals the unexpected pleasures of being neighborly.

As Californians, we tend to like our neighborhoods, but we are not so sure about our neighbors. Sure, we’re all for getting along, but like other big, diverse states, we score low on the neighborly scale. Commentator Joe Mathews says a friendlier attitude would do us some good. He recently overcame a strong instinct not to attend a block party on his street and found the experience to be meaningful in ways he hadn’t expected.
