Volker Bertelmann (Hauschka)

Volker Bertelmann, who performs under the name Hauschka, is a Düsseldorf-born composer, pianist, and experimental musician. He is renowned for his innovative use of prepared piano techniques, altering the instrument’s sound with objects placed inside its strings. His solo albums explore avant-garde and minimalist traditions, while his film scoring career has brought him global acclaim.

Bertelmann won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2023 for his work on Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front, and he has also composed music for films such as Lion (2016) and The Old Guard (2020). Known for bridging experimental and classical traditions, Hauschka’s live performances combine technical innovation with emotional depth.
