Mexican Institute of Sound: Suave Patria
Camilo Lara, aka Mexican Institute of Sound, is definitely a true multi-tasker. In addition to being the vice-president of EMI Mexico and a huge music collector, he still manages to find time to produce genre bending tunes that fuze electronica and regional Mexican music to create an amazing amalgamation.
It's without a doubt in a class of its own. I've been fortunate to see him perform a lot over the years, and have been front and center to witness the evolution and growth of his work.
Suave Patria was produced to be played during the massive parade celebration through the streets of Mexico City. This entire 26 minute EP is intended to be a continuous set that gives the listener the experience of the journey within the different styles of Mexican music, from traditional to modern to cumbia to mariachi and back again. It blends the feelings of freedom, liberation, education and family through this very infectious party atmosphere. As a DJ myself, I have a great appreciation for thoughtful programming in sets, and this is a perfect example. The beginning, the journey, drama, emotion... It's all there and it's perfect how M.I.S. ties it all together.
