DON'T MISS THESE CULTURAL EVENTS AROUND L.A. THIS WEEK

Screening and discussion with artist Kenny Scharf and Bob Sain

November 5, 2002, 7:30 pm

Bing Theater, LACMA East

The season's first event organized by the LACMA Institute for Art and Cultures is not to be missed. A screening of Kenny Scharf's first cartoon is followed by a discussion with the artist conducted by Bob Sain, director of LACMA Lab. A decade ago, Kenny Scharf was a very hot artist whose name made people either cringe or green with envy. He explores the fuzzy boundaries between art, commerce and entertainment.

The New Yorker art critic Peter Schjeldahl discusses with LA Times architecture critic Nicolai Ourousoff "Pros and Cons of Contemporary Museum Design"

November 7th, 2002, 7 pm

UCLA Hammer Museum

This will be a good chance to ask them both whether museum architecture is serving art or does art exist for the glory of the architecture?

FOR MATURE AUDIENCES ONLY. UCLA PERFORMING ARTS CONTINUES ITS PRESENTATION OF THE INTERNATIONAL THEATER FESTIVAL

Societas Raffaello Sanzio presents "Giulio Cesare"

November 1-2, 8 pm; November 3, 7pm

Freud Playhouse, UCLA

Shakespeare's Julius Ceasar in a shockingly controversial presentation by the Italian avant-garde group Societas Raffaelo Sanzio. Prepare to be unsettled and challenged.

Wooster Group in "To you, the Birdie (Phedre)"

November 8-17

Freud Playhouse, UCLA

For my money, this is probably the best dramatic theater in the United States which made an indelible impression on LA audiences during their extremely rare tour of Southern California more than a decade ago. The remarkable film actor Willem Dafoe is among the cast. Based on Racine's "Phedre," which was inspired by the Greek tragedy by Euripedes. A queen's forbidden love for her stepson brings down the kingdom.
