3 Design Things To Do This Weekend

These are three events DnA recommends you check out this weekend.

1. Serigrafía

This Sunday at the Pasadena Museum of California art a survey of information design in California’s Latino culture will open, featuring thirty influential silkscreens from the 1970s to the present. Co-curated by Carol Wells of the Center for the Study of Political Graphics, this exhibit displays graphic art that was created at and distributed by artist-led collectives, or centros, emerging in concert with the civil rights movement and activism for political and social justice for marginalized groups.

When: Opens January 19, 2014, and runs until April 20, 2014

Where: Pasadena Museum of California Art

Tickets: $7 for adults, $5 for seniors and students; free for PMCA members and children under 12; free the first Friday of every month (12–5pm); free the third Thursday of every month (5–8pm). Access for people with disabilities is provided.

2. Jeffrey Kipnis + Stephen Turk: Figure Ground Game, An Architecturalists Show

The Southern California Institute of Architecture kicks of the new year with the opening Friday night of a show co-curated by, architect/theorist/provocateur Jeffrey Kipnis, who will also chat with SCI-Arc director Eric Owen Moss. Figure Ground, says Kipnis, refers to the way “an important figure stands out against a background, like the face in a portrait against the background, or a chess piece (figure) on the board (ground), sort of like signal to noise. The title is used for the show, however, as a play on words – invoking that tradition, but also to suggest a new way architecture might relate to the ground (more or less as figures in motion.) That issue, it turns out, is one of the most important and powerful in the history of the discipline.”

3. Andrew Moore: CUBA

The Los Angeles Times describes as “indelible” these photographs of the people and worn buildings of Cuba, spanning from the late ’90s, when the island nation was emerging from the “Periodo especial” (Special Period), the period following the demise of the USSR, to 2012, a time that Moore believes is ripe with hope for change.

When: Exhibit runs from January 11, 2014- February 15, 2014
