    Yes we CAN!

Uncanny resemblance to the LAX Theme Building, don’t you think? Submission from CANstructionLA 2013.

Don’t you love it when architects and designers have a can do attitude?

Witness it firsthand this week at the 8th annual CANstructionLA, where many of L.A.’s top designers and architects will participate in a competition to build large-scale sculptures using solely canned food items.

In an effort to raise awareness of hunger in Los Angeles, the competition is a fundraiser for the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank where all cans used in the project will be donated. Expect to see canned sculptural iterations of the Grand Canyon, an In-N-Out Burger and the minions from Despicable Me 2 this year among a few other themes that the teams have chosen. Visitors can vote on their favorite canned structure by donating $1 or a canned food item.

The submissions will be judged by a panel of architecture, media and culinary experts and will be judged in categories ranging from Juror’s Favorite, Best Meal, Best Use of Labels, Structural Ingenuity, Honorable Mention and a People’s Choice Award based off of the votes of visitors.

For the second year in a row, the competition will be held at the Farmers and Merchants Building in downtown Los Angeles and will be part of Downtown Los Angeles’s monthly Art Walk.

When: Construction Event– Thursday, March 13 12:00-10:00 P.M.

    Public Exhibition+Voting–Friday, March 14, 11 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday & Sunday, March 15–16, 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Where: The historic Farmers & Merchants Bank Building; 401 S. Main St., Los Angeles

Tickets: Free and open to the public.
