Pasadena Showcase House of Design: This year’s Pasadena Showcase House, Paul Williams’ 1927 English Period Revival estate, will open for the public on April 17. John Bishop Green, a painting contractor, rancher and real estate broker, commissioned the construction of the 7,205 square foot home at a cost of $36,525. The Southwest Builder and Contractor reported in 1927 that Paul R. Williams had completed plans for a two-story and basement, fourteen-room brick veneer dwelling “of the English farmhouse type.” Williams borrowed ideas from the past without using excessive ornamentation and, according to one critic; he was “the last word in elegant traditionalism.”

AWA Design Symposium: The Association for Women in Architecture present a conference on design research at USC on April 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Speakers include Christine Astorino, CEO of Fathom – the firm behind Consol Energy Center and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; Tyra Lowman, Sr. Director of Spa Brands for Hilton Worldwide; Jason Long, Associate at international design partnership Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and lead architect for Quebec National Beaux-Arts Museum. Steve Orr at the Ebell: Garden writer Steve Orr will be giving a lecture about his new book, “Tomorrow’s Garden” on April 20 at the Ebell Theater at 6 p.m. “Steve’s book explores innovative, manageable and responsible approaches to urban garden making. His photography is beautiful and he succeeds in creating something rare, a book that is both inspiring and accessible.”
