    Design and Architecture at School

Despite the acknowledgement that arts education plays an essential role in educational, emotional and professional development, many students in LA County have no arts classes at all. Frances Anderton learns about a ten-year strategic plan to restore dance, music and visual arts to the curriculum from Ayanna Higgins, Arts Education Director for the LA County Arts Commission. Architectural writers Morris Newman and Jade Chang look at three examples of how design is changing in the schools. Also, a conversation with director-writer Sheila Hayman about an early childhood visual arts education that spread through the industrialized world, conceived by a German mineralogist who wanted to become an architect.
