WeHo's Sunset Spectacular

The city of West Hollywood wants a new billboard to a site it owns on the Sunset Strip. But it doesn’t want any old rectangle with a static image. Instead it wants a dynamic digital billboard that inspires residents, and other billboard owners; and offers a public space for people to gather.

The city of West Hollywood wants a new billboard to a site it owns on the Sunset Strip. But it doesn’t want any old rectangle with a static image. Instead it wants a dynamic digital billboard that inspires residents, and other billboard owners; and offers a public space for people to gather.

This Sunset Spectacular design competition, as well as ordinances and an environmental impact report are all aimed at making the Sunset Strip the spectacle it once was. DnA spoke to West Hollywood city Councilmember John D’Amico, as well as Bianca Siegl, Long Range and Mobility Planning Manager for the City of West Hollywood. We heard from Tom Wiscombe, Roger Sherman, Tyler Kicera and Patrik Schumacher, members of the four shortlisted teams.

"The Prism," a proposal by JCDecaux in collaboration with Zaha Hadid

And we asked Patrik Schumacher, director of Zaha Hadid Architects, about the challenges ahead for the firm following the sudden death of Zaha Hadid.
