William Wegman Pairs His Dogs With High-End Furniture

When William Wegman’s Weimaraners pose on Eames and Nakashima chairs, you get a very stylish dog story.

What do you get if you combine Weimaraners and sleek mid-century modern furniture? A stylish dog story. William Wegman, the one-time California-based artist, has become famous for his photographs of his dogs posing on chairs, in funny hats, or wearing people’s clothing.

Now he has a new show at Marc Selwyn Fine Art in Beverly Hills called “New and Used Furniture 1972 – 2015.” His dogs pose on Eames chairs, benches and stools as well as furniture by designer George Nakashima.

Back in 1982, Wegman explained to David Letterman how he began making experimental films involving his Weimaraner dog Man Ray.

“I was doing floor pieces, things like that, and he was just a total pest, an impossible dog. And I’d be taping something on the floor, and there he was, but he looked great. He looked a lot better than the bits of cheese or nails or whatever it was I was conceptually placing in the corner. And he was grey, and that seemed to suit black and white video very well,” Wegman said.

Since then the one-time California-based artist has become famous for his photographs of his dogs posing on chairs, in funny hats, or wearing people’s clothing.

DnA met up with Wegman, along with gallery owner Marc Selwyn and Wallpaper Magazine U.S. Editor Michael Reynolds.
