DreamWorks Animation Bought by NBCUniversal for $3.8 Billion

The good news for Jeffrey Katzenberg is that he's about to make a whole bunch of money. The bad news is that he'll potentially be walking away from the company he co-founded with Steven Spielberg and David Geffen. His new position will be as a consultant to NBCUniversal and chairman of a new division called DreamWorks New Media. The multi-billion-dollar sale also means that Illumination, Universal's animation division, will now have access to many more resources and a campus in Glendale. In many ways, the merger mirrors what Disney did with Pixar, buying another animation company and keeping them in separate silos. It will also give NBCUniversal the ability to use DreamWorks characters in its ever-growing theme park business.
