    Oscar Nominations Lack Diversity

The 2015 Oscar nominations are out, and the nominees are overwhelmingly male and overwhelmingly white. Director Ava DuVernay is seen as one of the major snubs. While her film, Selma, was nominated for Best Picture, the movie received no other nominations except Best Song.

After Ava DuVernay made history as the first African American woman to be nominated for a Best Director Golden Globe, there was hope she might be nominated for an Oscar as well. While her film Selma was nominated for Best Picture, neither DuVernay nor David Oyelowo, the actor who portrayed Martin Luther King, Jr., were nominated. In fact, the 20 nominees in the acting categories have one thing in common -- they're all white. The lack of diversity among nominees was one major take-away from this morning's announcement, along with surprise at the high number of nominations for Wes Anderson's Grand Budapest Hotel, a Fox Searchlight movie that came out last March, months before most Oscar hopefuls show up in theaters.
