Snubs and Surprises in 2016 Oscar Nominations

Oscar nominations are out, and even in a supposedly modern age, this year's nominees are strikingly white. Room got a surprising boost, while Straight Outta Compton was snubbed.

This year's awards race continues to feel muddy. There's still a lack of a real frontrunner, though The Revenant led the nominations with 12. Before today, The Martian's Ridley Scott was favored to win best director, but he didn't even get nominated. Neither did Steven Spielberg for Bridge of Spies. Aaron Sorkin also failed to get a nominating for writing Steve Jobs. In surprise nominations, the indie movie Room did well, scoring noms for best picture and best director in Lenny Abrahamson. The Oscars continue to have a diversity problem, or more specifically lack thereof. Yet again, the nominees are overwhelmingly white even though there were several strong movies like Straight Outta Compton,Beasts of No Nation and Creed that featured more diverse cast and crews. Creed did get a nomination, but only for Sylvester Stallone as Best Supporting Actor.
