Kim and John discuss the implications for the Screen Actors' Guildand the Golden Globe Awards' nominations. The news rings in the official awards season which culminates with the Oscars in February. The SAG awards are somewhat predictive of Oscar given that actors make up the largest voting bloc in the Academy. But they hardly tell the whole story. For instance, a movie like Gravity -- sure to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar -- was left off of the Best Ensemble list (SAG's version of best picture) given that the cast consists of two only people. Meanwhile the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) which puts on the Golden Globes is made up of about 90 foreign journalists from far flung places. They are certainly not Academy voters and yet the Globes can give momentum and publicity buzz to movies in contention for the Oscar. Note that both of these awards include television -- some top TV nominees for both awards include Breaking Bad and Downton Abbey. Meanwhile, Homeland, Game of Thrones and Mad Men were snubbed by the Globes.
