Backroom Dealings and the Minimum Wage

Workers today marched outside Los Angeles City Hall to call for a new bureau for fighting wage theft. It comes as the full LA City Council is expected tomorrow to debate and perhaps vote on asking the City Attorney to draw up an official ordinance to be voted on that, if passed, would raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2020. Some business leaders say it’s a job killer and restaurant owners have threatened to sue if there’s no exemption for workers who earn tips. Meanwhile, a last-minute amendment from Council President Herb Wesson to add 12 days of paid time off was pulled last week. Some say backroom dealings like these are making the City Council start to look like the State Legislature. KCRW's Steve Chiotakis talked to LA Observed's Kevin Roderick about the minimum wage battle.
