Civil Resistance: The Power of the People

All across the world people are finding ways are using nonviolent resistance to tackle corruption, to challenge their governments, and to protect their lands and their culture. The strategies for a successful movement have evolved since the days of Gandhi, but at its heart civil resistance harnesses the power of many to oppose those in power. America Abroad travels from Latin America to Africa and Southeast Asia to see what's happening on the ground and gain perspectives from successful movements in the past seeking to answer where this strategy works and how it works best.

We hear from a woman in Zimbabwe whose organization is pressing President Robert Mugabe to expand social and economic freedoms; We visit Chennai, India, to meet a group that's found an innovative way to stand up to bribery; And we travel to the isolated village of San José de Apartadó in northwestern Colombia, where for close to two decades they have remained committed to non-violence despite recurring attacks and numerous losses.
