KCRW Live: A Campus Divided
The election in November exposed a deep political disconnect in America. One place that tension has been felt most is on college campuses around the country. KCRW's Jonathan Bastian brings together a panel of UC Santa Barbara students with diverse backgrounds and beliefs to discuss how divided they really are and how to talk to one another with respect.
Since the election, politically charged protests have erupted at alarming rates on college campuses nationwide. On UC campuses, troubles have stemmed from conservative speakers cancelling speeches due to student and administrative outrage. These incidents have raised questions about free speech versus hate speech, and what role universities play in promoting a diversity of political ideas while protecting students who feel unsafe.
In a special live broadcast from UC Santa Barbara's Multicultural Center, KCRW's Jonathan Bastian steps away from the daily political buzz and asks a diverse group of college students, the newest generation of American voters, to reflect on where this country is heading and how to foster healthy dialogue among their peers.
Panelists:
Andrew Gates, economics and philosophy major and president of the UCSB College Republicans
Samantha Sanchez, music major and member of the Black Student Union
Cole Marting, political science major and Off-Campus Senator for Associated Students
Oscar Zarate, political science major and leader of I.D.E.A.S., a resource and support group for undocumented students.
