As the Kushner Turns

Gustavo Arellano on more woes for the OC Register's owner.

Fall has not been a kind season to Orange County Register owner Aaron Kushner. After shutting down the LA version of his paper and laying off dozens, the Register faced public embarrassment after its new distributors failed to deliver the paper to readers. Last week, Kushner stepped down as the Register's publisher--then the Los Angeles Times sued the Reg in LA Superior Court over what they say is unpaid bills. And today, the New York Times reported that Kushner plans even more layoffs. The man hailed by many media observers as the last, best hope for daily journalism just can't seem to get a break anymore. Is Kushner on his way out--or is he retreating for one final stand?
