A Trip Down the San Joaquin

California’s second longest river runs 417 miles, from the Sierra Nevadas near Yosemite to the San Francisco Bay. The advocacy group American Rivers recently named it the most endangered river in the country. The threats: over engineering, over diversion and just plain old overuse. It was these threats - and the idea that a river could die - that inspired CNN’s John Sutter to travel the river on kayak... and sometimes on foot.
