The City Planning Commission Thursday approved a huge, controversial development project for South Los Angeles . It’s called The Reef and it would bring more than 1,000 apartments and condos, a grocery store and retail to a part of the city that, so far, has been largely left out of LA’s development boom.

But not everyone is happy about it, and many community activists say this kind of project is a harbinger for gentrification and displacement.
