Representatives of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and opposition leader Juan Guaido are trying to find a peaceful solution after months of bloody clashes and a failed uprising.

But while the two sides talk, life inside the country continues to worsen. The economy is on the verge of total collapse. Its currency is practically worthless. Food and medicine are in short supply. Millions of people have fled.

This sort of devastation usually happens when countries are at war. But that’s not what happened in Venezuela. Not long ago, it was the richest country in South America, sitting on top of the world’s largest confirmed oil reserves.
