When photographer Gregory Halpern received a Guggenheim grant in 2014, he migrated from Upstate New York to Los Angeles, and spent a year photographing the landscape. Those photographs are collected in his new book, “ZZYZX.” And the title is just as mysterious as the images themselves.

Although they were all taken in real places around the city, the photographs feel almost otherworldly.
