    The World of Women Crime Writers

    When you think of early noir crime writers, you may think of Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler. But have you heard of Dorothy Hughes? Her novel, In a Lonely Place , was made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. And there’s Vera Caspary, whose book Laura became a film by Otto Preminger.

    When you think of early noir crime writers, you may think of Dashiell Hammett or Raymond Chandler. But have you heard of Dorothy Hughes? Her novel, In a Lonely Place, was made into a movie starring Humphrey Bogart. And there’s Vera Caspary, whose book Laura became a film by Otto Preminger. In fact, there were a number of successful female crime-fiction writers after World War II. Their books have been in and out of print. But now a new two-volume set has been put out by the Library of America.
