When Britain’s Channel 4 suggested that filmmaker Dan Reed make a documentary about the pedophilia allegations that dogged Michael Jackson for years, the idea was that the project would be just one hour of television. Then Reed started on-camera interviews with Wade Robson and James Safechuck, two men who say Jackson sexually abused them for years when they were children. Eventually Reed interviewed their mothers and siblings and the hour-long project expanded to two hours and then four. He tells us about making this unflinching documentary and how, despite a lawsuit from the Jackson estate, HBO is standing behind ‘Leaving Neverland.’
