“The Old Guard” is director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s first big-budget action movie. Before this, she directed smaller acclaimed films like “Love and Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights.”

This shift in focus has paid off for Prince-Bythewood. “The Old Guard” is already on the list of 10 most-watched Netflix original films.

Prince-Bythewood explains how she came to direct the film. It involves her lifelong love of superhero narratives and an offhand comment from her son.

Prince-Bythewood also shares what it took to reach this moment in her career, and how she built rapport with her visual effects team to accomplish her vision.
