    How Director Tom McCarthy Got 'Spotlight' Right

    Despite a shrinking budget and difficult subject matter, director Tom McCarthy pulled together a stellar ensemble including Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams to portray the unglamorous work of investigative reporting for his new movie Spotlight.

    Tom McCarthy, the director and co-writer of Spotlight, is a true multi-hyphenate. He's an actor who appeared in Meet the Parents and the HBO series, The Wire. McCarthy's breakthrough as a director came when he made the 2003 film The Station Agent, which he also wrote. He followed that with two more well-received films, The Visitor and Win-Win. McCarthy tells us how Spotlight went from non-starter to awards contender -- and how the plan for his career as a writer, actor and director has always been...don't have a plan.
